Darika Hill puts up a shot for the Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals in an 85-64 win over Lon Morris Saturday afternoon in Jacksonville. Hill poured in a season-high 31 points to lead TVCC.

JACKSONVILLE — Darika Hill was a difference-maker Saturday afternoon for the Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals.

The 5-11 freshman fired in a season-high 31 points to lead the TVCC women to an 85-64 decision over the Lon Morris Lady Bearcats at Vivian and Bob Smith Gymnasium.

Hill was TVCC’s most reliable scoring threat, especially in the first half. She scored 19 points in the opening 20 minutes, enabling the Lady Cardinals to offset Kendrea Walker’s scoring prowess for LMC. Walker scored 12 points on her way to a team-high 23.

Behind Walker, LMC was in control early on. She scored six quick points to lead the Lady Bearcats to an early 9-3 advantage. Lon Morris led for the final time at the 12:31 mark, going up 13-12 on a pair of Misty Hurse free throws.

Stephanie Madden and Hill ignited a 10-0 TVCC run for a 22-13 lead. Ashley Norris and Walker brought the Lady Bearcats back within one before TVCC took off again. The Lady Cardinals outscored Lon Morris 19-9 in the final 5:55 for a 41-30 halftime lead.

Hill had 12 of the points in the Lady Cardinals’ strong close, hitting a pair of three-pointers and creating the other six points on penetrations for pull-up jumpers.

The Lady Cardinals b uilt on their 11-point halftime cushion in the first eight minutes of the second half. By the 12:10 mark, it was up to 19, 57-38.

The TVCC scoring was more balanced in the final half, much of it at the free throw line. The Lady Cardinals, 17 of 25 from the line for the game, were 14 of 21 from the stripe in the second half.

It was a good thing the Lady Cardinals were on target at the free throw line in the second half. Their shooting from the floor left something to be desired, hitting 13 of 42 shots.

Ashley Walker also played a big role in the Lady Cardinals’ burying LMC in the second half. For about a four-minute stretch she seemingly grabbed every rebound. Walker had 13 points.

The win improved TVCC to 15-6 overall and 6-3 after the first half of conference play. Lon Morris dropped to 10-10 and 2-7.

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to travel Wednesday to Lufkin to play Angelina College at 5:30 p.m.
