Fishing has arrived at Athens High School as the team hosted the Hornet Classic on Saturday.

The tournament was an open invitational tournament held at Lake Athens.

The sponsors for the team are Jeff Jones and Edward Wilbanks.

Jones works in the agriculture department at Athens High School.

This is the first year for the fishing program at Athens High School.

Jones said 24 teams took part in the event as the team of Daniel Ramsey and Garrett Thomas won the event. They won with a total weight of 9.55 pounds.

The second place team was Jim Brack and Justin Jones with a total weight of 8.95 pounds.

Coming in third was a former NBA player in Greg Ostertag and Brent Edwards.

They finished with a total weight of 8.30 pounds.

Jones said it was interesting for him to see Ostertag taking part in the Hornet Classic on Saturday

Jonathan Burton finished in fourth place with a total of 8.13 pounds, while the fifth place team of Justin Shelton and Dakota Pfoh weighed in at 7.19 pounds.

The sixth place team was David and Collin Newsome with a total weight of 6.96 pounds.

Jones said with this being the first year for the fishing program, he was pleased with how the team performed.

In seventh place was the team of Josh Snowden and Jay Reedy.

The team finished in seventh place with a total weight of 5.71 pounds.

The eighth place team in the tournament was Frank Kirk and Tery Mayhall with a total weight of 3.98 pounds.

The ninth place team was Hayden Boyd and Bill Bolten with a total weight of 3.86 pounds.

In 10th place, Phillip Prince caught three fish for a total weight of 1.87 pounds.

In 11th place was the team of Jones and Kenneth Hancock as they caught two fish for a total weight of 1.66 pounds.

The final team to record a weight was Richard Bruce with a total weight of .69 pounds.

Some of the members of the AHS fishing team who competed in the tournament are Jacob Wilson, William Stewart, Ryan Honea, Cody Rayburn, Ty Fernandez and Snowden.

The mission statement on the Athens ISD website says, “The AHS Fishing team is to promote the sport of fishing by providing a network of fishing knowledge and resources to make our students better anglers.

“Students can increase their knowledge and skills through club meetings and participating in competitive fishing tournaments. Students will have the opportunity to learn from experienced fishermen and experts in the outdoor field.

“The AHS Fishing Team will also provide an avenue for students to excel in an organized team sport, who may have traditionally not had the opportunity.”

Currently, the team will be competing in the Texas High School Bass Association as part of the East region schedule.

The first tournament is set for Sept. 13 at Lake of the Pines with Jefferson being the host school.
