GRAND SALINE — The No. 4 LaPoynor Flyers continued their playoff push as they returned to Grand Saline High School on Thursday for the opener of their regional semifinal series against the Union Hill Bulldogs.

Behind Dawson Fortner's gem on the mound, the Flyers rallied from an early deficit and the offense was stellar with excellent baserunning as LaPoynor took care of the Bulldogs, 10-3, in Game 1.

After a leadoff walk by Clay Joyner and a single by Matthew Massingill, the Bulldogs struck first, 2-0, with Joyner scoring on an error by Kase Johnston and Massingill coming home on a passed ball.

In the top of the second, Caden Young got LaPoynor on the board to trail 2-1 as he scored on an error by Colt Mallory.

In the top of the third, the Flyers broke through for the 4-2 lead and led for good when Blaine Coats scored Caleb Solis with an RBI single and Coats and Dawson Turner both scored as Johnston reached first base on an error by Massingill.

LaPoynor plated a trio in the top of fourth as Young scored on an error by Jared Caffey, Solis scored Jared Sanchez with an RBI single and Solis came home when Fortner grounded out and the Flyers led 7-2.

Jett Riley singled and Johnston scored as Riley dashed to second base and the score was 8-2 in the top of the fifth.

The Bulldogs plated their last run as Luke Batts' RBI double scored Randy Griffith and Union Hill trailed 8-3.

LaPoynor scored two more in the top of the seventh and won by the score of 10-3.

Riley's RBI single scored Turner and Riley scored on an error from Nick Rickman.

Fortner was excellent in the win for the Flyers as he pitched five innings with three runs on three hits plus eight strikeouts and two walks. He retired 14 of the last 18 batters that he faced.

Mason Grubbs pitched two shutout innings of relief with three strikeouts.

For the game, the Flyers stole twelve bases as Young led with four and Turner and Sanchez both had two apiece.
