CANTON — Opening District 14-AAA with two road games, Keith Durrett said his Athens Lady Hornets had to have a split at the very least. Whatever it took, that’s what they had to have.

And that’s exactly what they got Tuesday night with a 66-49 win over the No. 14 Canton Eaglettes behind sophomore Alex Furr’s 36-point performance.

Furr scored 18 points in the second quarter to enable the Lady Hornets to open up a 32-22 halftime lead after trailing 9-7 at the end of the first quarter. She finished the game with seven three-pointers, four of which came in the quarter

The win upped the Lady Hornets’ season record to 15-7 and kept them alive early on in defense of their district title at 1-1. Brownsboro and Bullard, which was a 55-39 winner over AHS Friday night, are 2-0. Canton is also 1-1 and Van and Chapel Hill are both 0-2.

The Lady Hornets are scheduled to return to action Friday at home against Van. Junior varsity action tips off at 4:30 p.m.

Though Furr was the difference in the game when it came to points, all five Lady Hornet starters contributed significantly in the win. In addition to senior point guard Staci Hankins running the show offensively and adding eight points, posts Asha Wilson and Bailey Starkes controlled the boards, often keeping key possessions alive, and wing Jasmine Blakemore had seven points and aided the defensive effort.

Wilson finished with nine points and Starkes had seven.

Canton concentrated its defensive effort in the first quarter on not allowing Hankins and Furr freedom beyond the three-point arc. The Lady Hornets attempted just one from the outer limits in the quarter.

All that changed once the second quarter began and the Lady Hornets pushed the ball to the offense end and were much quicker and efficient in distributing the ball and setting screens. Furr hit four three-pointers in the quarter, hitting her first four attempts.

AHS continued the onslaught in the third quarter, outscoring the Eaglettes 18-10 to carry a 50-32 lead into the fourth.

But the Eaglettes had no quit in them, scoring the first eight points of the period, led by Meagan Wilson and Cassie Williams, to quickly get back in the game. Less than two minutes into the quarter, the Lady Hornet lead had slipped to 10, 50-40.

Furr came up with a three-point play off a layup and foul, Blakemore knocked down a 10-foot jumper and Wilson hit a shot inside over the next couple of minutes to help turn back Canton. The issue was decided with 2:27 left when Furr connected with a three-pointer.

In the junior varsity game, Canton was a 36-16 winner.

Christina Dennis was the top AHS scorer with seven points.
