The Athens Lady Hornets qualified for the Class 3A volleyball playoffs with a five-game win over Palestine Westwood Friday night at the Athens High School Gym.

The Lady Hornets (13-21) were forced to tangle with Westwood after both teams finished tied or third in District 20-AAA play at the end of the regular season. Athens and Westwood split their two matchups this season.

Athens won games 1, 3 and 5 by scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 15-9. Westwood won games 2 and 4 by scores of 25-19 and 25-19.

“We played with heart and determination tonight — something we have been lacking at times this season,” AHS head coach Tosha Spain said. “I am proud of the team. They deserve to be in the playoffs.”

The Lady Hornets are scheduled to face Groesbeck in the bi-district round of the playoffs Tuesday. A game time was not immediately available.

“We are looking forward to moving on,” Spain said. “This will be a short weekend and a quick turnaround for the Tuesday game against Groesbeck.”
