When it comes to home openers, the Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals know how to get the job done.

In the fall, they were a 12-1 winner over Angelina in the first-ever game of the school’s inaugural softball season at the Athens High School diamond.

Saturday afternoon, the Lady Cardinals opened the home portion of their spring schedule at their very own renovated Cain Park field and pulled out a dramatic 3-2 win over North Central Texas College.

Things didn’t go as well in the second game with TVCC suffering a 13-1 loss.

The split left Coach Ashley Johnston’s squad 1-3 on the season. NCTC improved to 4-2.

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to return to action Tuesday at home against Lon Morris. Doubleheader action begins at noon.

The biggest hit for the Cardinals was provided by catcher Amber Johnson. Jumping all over the first pitch, Johnson slammed the ball over the left field fence for a lead-off homer in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Johnson’s round-tripper tied the score at 2-2.

Lisa McAllister followed Johnson to the plate and worked NCTC pitcher Candice Mitchell for a single. After Natalie Norman struck out, Katie Sargent moved McAllister with a sacrifice bunt.

McAllister scored when a throwing error on a ground ball off the bat of Brittany Johnson got away from NCTC first baseman Ashlee Coleman.

The Lady Lions got a runner aboard in the seventh with one out, but couldn’t get the tying run home. Lady Cardinal pitcher retired the next two batters to preserve the win.

Braxton went the distance, giving up five hits sriking out two and not issuing a walk.

The Lady Cardinals scored their first run in the first inning on an Amber Johnson sacrifice fly. She brought home Kenzi Morton, who had reached on a fielder’s choice.

Jennifer Patina and Braxton had singles in the first inning.

NCTC tied the score in the fourth inning on a J.J. Addington home run.
