MESQUITE — The Athens Hornets’ trip to the metroplex Tuesday night was not a pleasant one. They dropped an 80-49 decision to the Horn Jaguars in a non-district basketball game.

The Hornets are scheduled to be back in action Thursday in the opening round of the Fairfield tournament.

First-year coach Kenneth Mangrum’s Hornets got off to a slow start. Horn raced out to a 24-5 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. The Jaguars led 44-16 at the half.

Simeon Neal set the pace for the AHS scoring with 16 points. Kardarrion Dora had 10. Jordan Wimberley added eight and Ak Jordan seven. Scott Spears finished with six.

James Graham was Horn’s top scorer with 20 points. Johwn Bowman had 16.
