Athens senior Krystal Davis will be counted on at third base during the Lady Hornets bi-district playoff series on Friday against Bullard.

The Athens Lady Hornets lost their only warm up game of the post season, 3-2, to the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats in five innings Monday night in Sulphur Springs.

Coach Morgan Harpole said the game was called in the fifth inning due to the weather.

“We had to stop with a runner on first and third in the top of the fifth inning,” Harpole said. “It was beginning to look really bad ... We had all the momentum but unfortunately not enough to beat out the weather.”

The Lady Panthers come into the playoff series with a 19-5 record.

They finished out district play with an 11-1 record.

The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats opened up the scoring in the third inning.

Kasey Moore smacked a three-run home run to right field off starting pitcher Kristin House.

Athens was able to cut the lead to, 3-2, in the top of the fifth inning.

House reached on an error by the second baseman with two runners on as Sarah Red came in to score.

On the throw home, Hadley Cain scored for their only runs of the game.

Senior Josee McNeece and Sam Smith recorded the only hits of the game for Athens.

House recorded the loss as she went four innings, allowing three runs on five hits — two of them earned — with one strikeout and one walk.

House threw a total of 68 pitches in the game for the Lady Hornets.

Athens finished out last season with an 11-15 overall record under coach Jamie Poteete. Poteete coached the Lady Hornets for one season.
