Saucedo header ties it

Mabank’s Sam Saucedo (1) heads the ball into the net to tie her team’s match against Kilgore Friday morning at Bruce Field during second-day action at the Lady Hornet Cup soccer tournament. Mabank went on to win the match, 2-1, to move into the tournament’s Gold Bracket.

How’s that for a finish to pool play at the 2012 Lady Hornet Cup soccer tournament?

Mabank scored a pair of second half goals, including one with a little more than four minutes remaining, to shock the Kilgore Lady Bulldogs Friday, 2-1.

The victory made the Lady Panthers the only team among 12 in the tournament to go 3-0 through pool play and set them up as the No. 1 seed in the Gold Bracket heading into Saturday’s tournament finale.

For Kilgore, the finish might have seemed like deja vu. Mabank rallied past Kilgore in the playoffs last year in similar fashion. Kilgore finished pool play as the No. 4 seed in the Gold Bracket.

Maegan Olivarez’s putback goal off a Kelci Hill corner kick served as the go-ahead goal for the Lady Panthers. It came roughly 15 minutes after Sam Saucedo’s header evened the match at 1-1.

Mabank’s Madison Holyfield came up with a key block of a shot headed to the goal from inside the box in the closing minute, and a second chance was stopped by goal keeper Bailey Swain to put the game away.
