The Athens Hornets got another quality win Friday night with a 58-55 victory over the Mexia Blackcats, ranked No. 8 in Class 3A.

Desmond Bowie had 16 points and Nick Monmouth added 13 as Head Coach Tracy Carter’s Hornets improved to 12-9 on the season.

The win was also a little bit of payback for the Hornets, who were knocked out of the playoffs last year by Mexia.

“This was a very good road win in a rowdy atmosphere,” Carter said. “It was a total team effort.

Mexia trailed, 45-32, heading into the fourth quarter before staging a rally. The Blackcats outscored Athens, 23-10, in the fourth quarter, but key baskets by Kendall Sanders (9 points) and Monmouth proved to be good enough.

In junior varsity action, Athens scored a 48-44 victory over Mexia. Greg Sanders had 16 points, Keelan Lawyer added 12 and Chris Jefferson pitched in 11.

The freshman Hornets lost to Mexia, 33-31. Ryan Jefferson scored 15 for Athens.
