The Athens Hornets kept a solid grip on second place in District 17-3A with an 11-7 win over the Chapel Hill Bulldogs Monday at Hornet Field.

The win pushed Head Coach Patrick Penry’s Hornets to 17-7 on the season and 5-3 in district play behind leader Rusk, which faced Bullard Monday night.

Chapel Hill led 5-4 in the fifth before the Hornets plated seven runs in the bottom of the inning to take control. Athens sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning and took advantage of three Chapel Hill errors. Will Kirkland, Wesley Benton and Hunter Choate had RBI hits in the inning, and Ryan Hornsby also picked up a run batted in with a bases loaded walk.

Choate — who hit his fourth home run of the season in the first inning — came on in relief of Luke Solomon to close out the game. Solomon picked up the win.
