Athens High School recognized eight seniors in their final game at Hornet Field on Thursday night following an 11-0 win over the Mineola Yellowjackets. With the win, AHS is now 20-7-1 on the season and 7-2 in District 15-3A play with one game remaining next Thursday night. Thursday night was a fitting tribute for eight Athens seniors as they played their final regular season game at Hornet Field.

AHS dominated the Mineola Yellowjackets with an 11-0 run-rule win  to improve to 20-7-1 and 7-2 in District 15-3A play.

With the loss, Mineola drops to 9-14-1 and 2-7 in district play.

The game was played on Thursday due to Athens having school off today in observance of Good Friday.

Athens will wrap up the regular season Thursday night at Brownsboro. First pitch for the game is set for 6:30 p.m.

The game was set for Thursday due to students taking the STARR test next week.

The win sealed up a playoff berth for a Hornets team that made it to the regional quarterfinals last season.

This was the final game at home for Garrett Conley — who pitched four innings — allowing no runs on one hit with four strikeouts and one walk. He also went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Senior Adam Stallings came on in relief allowing no runs on one hit with one strikeout in the fifth.

Lance Funkhouser, Matt Werner, Josh Darden, Allen Jones, Daniel Mossberger and Jesse Taylor were also recognized for their contributions to the team during the season.

AHS bounced back from a tough 11-9 loss on Tuesday night against Mabank by outhitting Mineola, 10-2.

The third inning was when the Hornets blew the game open as they recorded seven runs in the inning.

The Hornets opened the inning with a single from Travis Takata, followed by a walk to Stallings.

Following a 2-1 count to Funkhouser, he roped a double to right field scoring Takata from second.

On the next at-bat, Taylor hit into a sacrifice fly as Stallings came in from third for the 5-0 lead.

Mossberger was then hit by a pitch for the second time in the ball game to load the bases.

On the next at-bat, Darden hit a line drive double to center field that scored Funkhouser.

The Hornets continued to put on the pressure as Conley reached on an error as Mossberger came in to score.

On the throw home, Darden made it home safely as Athens held an, 8-0, lead.

The Hornets would wrap up the scoring on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Boyd as Conley came into score on an error by the centerfielder for the 10-0 lead.

The Hornets would score the final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as Mossberger drove in courtesy runner Jeremy Bateman with a sacrifice fly.

Funkhouser led the way for the Hornets at the plate as he went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. He also had one of four doubles in the game.

Takata finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Taylor went 2-for-2 with an RBI  and a run scored.

Darden went 1-for-2 with two RBI, a double and a run scored. Michael Canales rounded out the hitting as he went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
