The No. 4 LaPoynor Flyers resumed their playoff journey on Friday night and are now on their way to the 1A regional finals after completing the sweep of the Union Hill Bulldogs at Grand Saline High School.
In Game 2 of their regional semifinal, the Flyers jumped out to an early lead that they would never relinquish and Kase Johnston threw a shutout gem as LaPoynor won, 5-0.
In the bottom of the first inning, Dawson Fortner and Blaine Coats led off with a double and single respectively and the Flyers capitalized as Dawson Turner scored Fortner and Coats with his two-run RBI triple and Johnston's RBI triple scored Turner for the 3-0 lead.
It was 4-0 after Jett Riley reached first base on an error by Luke Batts and Mason Grubbs scored.
LaPoynor scored their last run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Jared Sanchez brought home Austin Majors and the Flyers went on to pick up the 5-0 win, sweeping the Bulldogs.
Johnston earned the win on the mound with six shutout innings along with two hits plus fifteen strikeouts and three walks.
Fortner pitched one inning of relief with a strikeout.
Coats led the Flyers in hits as he went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Fortner, Turner and Johnston also had four plate appearances apiece and each of them picked up one hit.
Turner batted in two RBI's while Johnston, Riley and Sanchez each drove in one.
Coats and Caleb Solis both stole a base.
The LaPoynor Flyers will now enjoy an off week as they prepare to take on the Wells Pirates in the regional final, with the location to be determined.
The winner will advance to the state tournament, located at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
