ENNIS — The Ennis Lions used a 27-point second quarter to fuel a 66-40 non-district basketball victory over the Athens Hornets Monday night.

Ennis, which led 9-4 after one quarter, outscored first-year coach Kenneth Mangrum’s Hornnets 27-12 in the second quarter to take a 36-16 halftime lead. AHS never recovered, trailing 49-23 after three quarters.

The loss dropped the Hornets, coming off a 57-54 upset of No. 1-ranked and defending state champion Dallas Roosevelt, to 6-12 on the season.

The Hornets are scheduled to open District 14-AAA play on the road Friday against the Van Vandals. Action begins at 5 p.m.

Kardarrion Dora was the top AHS scorer with nine points. Kerry Gamble finished with seven and Odrick Ray six.

Jordan Wimberley had five for AHS, Russell Hopkins three and Scott Spears two.

The Lions’ balanced scoring effort was led by Eric Vasquez with nine points. Courtney Brooks had eight and Shawn Elliott seven.
