Jay Smith hit a three-pointer for the Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals on their first possession and they were on their way to a 92-89 win over Angelina College’s Roadrunners Wednesday night in Lufkin.

The Cardinals led from start to finish in recording a third straight victory, though it wasn’t without doing some serious sweating at the end. TVCC squandered a 16-point lead in a wide-open second half and wasn’t out of the woods and into the win column until Angelina missed a last-second three-pointer.

TVCC improved to 9-7 with a second straight Region XIV Conference road win. The Cardinals are 4-4 in league play. Angelina slipped to 5-11 and 4-4 marks.

The Cardinals’ next outing is at home Saturday against unbeaten Paris (16-0, 8-0). Game time is 4 p.m. after a 2 p.m. women’s game.

Smith hit seven three-pointers on his way to a 26-point performance. Mike Pugh had 22 points, including five treys.

TVCC was up 16 with 7:35 left in the game. But Angelina went on a 10-2 run to quickly cut the lead in half.

With 12 seconds remaining, the Cardinal lead was down to two, 91-89, and Angelina with the ball. With two second to go, Jerrod Tillman broke free in the right corner and put up a three-pointer that caromed off the rim.

The Cardinals were up 38-29 at the half.

Angelina shot 54 percent from the floor. The Cardinals hit 47 percent of their shots.

TVCC was 13-of-27 from three-point range.

Dee Roby was Angelina’s top scorer with 24 points.

In Wednesday’s other conference games, it was: Blinn 94, Lee 82; Navarro 90, Lon Morris 69; Paris 79, Panola 56; San Jacinto 82, Jacksonville 48; and Tyler 68, Kilgore 65.
