The Athens 12 and under dixie youth baseball team won its first two games at the state tournament over the weekend
The tournament is a double elimination tournament held in Center.
With two more wins in the tournament, they would advance to the title game on Tuesday.
If Athens advances to the title game, they will play at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Athens 8, Center 2
Athens won the first game of the tournament against Center with an 8-2 decision Saturday.
Karson Godwin started the game on the mound and went three scoreless innings.
He had five strikeouts in the game and joined the Nickel Club.
The Nickel Club is an award that Texas gives to a player who achieve five hits in a row or a pitcher who strikes out five batters in a row.
Leading the team at the plate were David Cornelius and Kobe Kale.
Coaches praised the play of Chris Garcia, Kobe Grimes and Triston Fisher with key hits against Center.
Athens 11, Huntington 3
In the second game of the tournament on Sunday, Athens took care of business against Huntington with an 11-3 win.
Grant Echols started on the mound and went six innings for the win.
Offensively, Athens was led by David Cornelius as he went 3-for-3 with a homerun.
Coaches praised the play of Stran Hines, Zack Cornelius, Kale, Garcia, Spencer Williamson and Karson Godwin.
Those players all had multiple hits in the win.
