The Athens Lady Hornets came out swinging on Tuesday versus ex-district rival Brownsboro with a 5-3 victory at Peg Cain Field.
The Lady Hornets started off the game by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump ahead of Brownsboro, highlighted by a two-run home run by sophomore Samantha Smith.
The Lady Hornets played some stellar defense throughout the game lead by sophomore pitcher, Kristin House, who allowed three runs with six strikeouts and one walk in a complete game.
The offense tried to push more runs across for insurance but only managed to score one in the bottom of the fifth inning on a double to right center field by Smith to score Haylee Adair from first base.
After pushing across one run in the top of the sixth inning, Brownsboro faced a 4-1 deficit.
A solo home run by Kirsten Anderson triggered Brownsboro's comeback attempt.
Two runs in the top of the seventh helped Brownsboro close its deficit to 5-3.
However, Athens was able to stop the rally when House got Brooke Johnson to single into a fielders choice to end the game and seal the win for the Lady Hornets.
The Lady Hornets will be in action Thursday-Saturday as they travel to the Sulphur Springs tournament.
The Lady Hornets will play Mt. Pleasant Thursday at 2:15 p.m. They will return on Friday to face Princeton at 10:45 a.m. and Sulphur Springs at 4 p.m.
They will then wrap up the tournament Saturday against Mineola at 2:15 p.m. and Wills Point at 4 p.m.
The Lady Hornets will return home next Tuesday against Van with the junior varsity set to begin at 5 p.m. The varsity will follow at 7 p.m.
