The Athens Hornets fell to the Crandall Pirates, 7-3, in a breezy non-district contest at Hornet Field Saturday afternoon.

Athens fell to 11-5 with the loss. Crandall improved to 12-6-1.

Morgan Sellers took the loss for the Hornets, who improved to 4-0 in District 20-3A action with an 11-1 win over Palestine on the road. The Hornets host Brownsboro Tuesday at Hornet Field in a 6 p.m. start. There will be no junior varsity game.

Sellers was one of three Hornets to see time on the mound against the Pirates. Luke Solomon and Oscar Valdez also pitched.

Matt Rose tossed 89 pitches in five innings to get the win. He gave up three runs (two earned) and seven hits.

A four-run fourth inning put the Pirates on top for good. The inning included a score on a wild pitch, a bases-loaded walk and a two-run single by Jared York.

Kyle Jones led the Hornets at the plate with a pair of singles and two RBI. Valdez also had a pair of hits. Jack Barkley, Solomon, Carson Hutson and pinch hitter Cody Willett each collected one hit.

In junior varsity action, the Hornets and the Pirates tied at 7-7.
