KAUFMAN — It’s on to District 14-AAA to defend their title for the Athens Lady Hornets after a third-place finish in the Kaufman tournament.

The Lady Hornets outlasted Hempstead for a 50-41 win Saturday afternoon in the third-place game, giving them a 4-1 mark in the tournament.

AHS, 14-6 on the year, is scheduled to open district play Friday at Bullard.

Alex Furr tossed in 23 points and Staci Hankins had 13 for AHS against Hempstead.

Bailey Starkes netted seven points.

AHS led 29-21 at the half.

Host Kaufman was a 49-44 winner over the Lady Hornets in the semifinals.

Kaufman erased the Lady Hornets’ 13-10 lead after one quarter with a 23-13 scoring edge in the second period.

Furr led the way with 16 points. Asha Wilson had 10 and Hankins nine.

Kaufman fell 36-33 to Clyde in the the title game.
