The Henderson County Relay for Life is a county-wide event that has been bringing local residents together for years. Relay for Life is a volunteer event that allows local residents to help in the fight against cancer, and is taking place at the Henderson County Fairpark Complex Friday night.
The American Cancer Society implements hours of research in hopes of curing cancer, and the money raised during relay helps keep that research going.
The majority of the money raised goes to help local patients in the form of purchasing wigs, pre-paid gas cards, and other expenses that cause hardship for families.
Currently, there are 320 participants signed up for this year’s Relay event, consisting of 26 teams. One of the teams has already raised $7,000. The number of participants, and the money raised, goes up by the minute, and registration will still be available during the event Friday.
Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. There will be a survivor dinner, and the opening ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. RV spots are available for $15, and that money will be donated to the event as well. The event will last a total of 12 hours, wrapping up at 7 a.m. with a closing ceremony.
Mary Nicholson, chair of the 2011 event, said there is a challenge to which participants refuse to give in.
“The 12 hours signify a victim’s journey. They want to give up at times during the fight, but they don’t,” Nicholson said. “We want to give up during the night and stop walking or go to sleep, but we can’t. We all must work together to prevail.”
There will be many games and fun laps that occur throughout the night to keep participants awake and having fun. There will be different bands, zumba, and Hawaiian-themed games that pertain to this year’s “Hula for the Moolah” theme.
If anyone wishes to register, it can still be done on the website. You can still register a team or join a team, register as a survivor, caregiver, or just sign up.
Donations are always being accepted, and can also be done online at the Henderson County Relay for Life website. The website is http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=32481&pg=entry. This website can be used for registration at any time.
