With Memorial Day weekend upon us, summer is here. School is out for many and it is time for vacations and the time of year water parks open. A new area attraction is currently under development between Malakoff and Athens.
Robert & Kenton Ford and Mitchell Pate & Mitchell Pate Jr., otherwise known as Pate & Ford Enterprises, are a team of fathers and their sons opening Coal Miners RV & Water Park in Malakoff. The attraction will sit on 67 acres off of Highway 31 and CR 1403.
The team has been in business for over 35 years, but as Pate & Ford one and a half years. Mitchell Pate Sr., one of the owners, said “We are trying to bring a destination to Malakoff, where people will want to come and spend a weekend and have a good time.”
20 acres of the property is being converted into an RV park & water park. The company plans to have some pads with electricity and water hookups.
“Our first feature is a wave pool, it will have a foot-deep splash pool featuring five slides and two dump buckets with a playground in the middle,” he said.
There will be a section on the side for smaller children. It will feature a four-inch pool with a frog and fish where children slide out of the animal's mouth. We want to expand as time goes on to include a full water park on an additional ten acres.
The construction deadline for the primary elements is set for July 4. There will be a store with items typically needed by RV and water park guests. The registration building and a clubhouse are currently being constructed, playground set up and the pool is set to pour all before the deadline. The severe weather has made it difficult but the owners have high hopes it will reach completion. The clubhouse will feature three full baths, a half bath, laundromat, a full kitchen and serving area, 14 foot by 60 foot pavilion with picnic tables and a 12 foot bu 15 foot hut with barbecue pits. They would like to lease them out to help people for family reunions, barbecue and events. A place where people can come enjoy themselves, or rent it. They will have an area right off the pool with 12 huge oaks, shaded where two playground structures will be.
“We as a family like to RV and spend time with the family, we are trying to create a destination where young families can come have a good time and enjoy themselves,” Pate said.
