A 58-year-old Seagoville man was killed when his vehicle slid into a small creek south of Athens Friday.

Department of Public Safety reports identified the victim as Donald Ray Ward, the driver and sole occupant of a 2007 Kia SUV.

Shortly after 1 a.m., Ward was driving the Kia on a side road off State Highway 19 in the vicinity of Catfish Creek, reports state. Ward apparently lost control of the vehicle and veered to the right, leaving the pavement on the west side of the roadway. The Kia apparently struck a tree and slid down an embankment, coming to rest upside down in the water.

Pct. 6 Justice of the Peace Milton Adams pronounced Ward dead at the scene and ordered the body sent to the Southwest Forensic Lab in Dallas for an autopsy.

Trooper Bradley Fulton is investigating the wreck for DPS.
