Individuals that hit several Athens businesses over the weekend seemed more intent on inflicting damage than grabbing valuables.

Athens Police Department reports included several similar incidents that left proprietors cleaning up broken glass and replacing windows.

The biggest loss was reported at All About Me Spa, at 104 Dull Averitt Street. According to APD reports, dispatch received a call that the store security alarm had been set off at about 11:30 p.m., on Sunday. The store manager told Officer Dana Dykes someone had broken out the front window of the location and grabbed about seven uniform tops. The tops, known as scrubs, were missing from a rack near the broken window.

“It was just a smash and grab,” Lieutenant Mike Davis said. “It looks like they just reached in the window. We had several windows broken that same night. Most of the places were just criminal mischief because we don’t believe they got in.”

Other incidents included criminal mischief at the Donut Supreme, at 709 West Corsicana Street. Police received a call from the business Friday morning reporting someone had broken out the window in the drive through. The business sustained damage in the $50-$500 range according to the report by Corporal Billy Westover.

Not far away, at 714 West Tyler Street a brick was thrown through the front window of the GL Barber Shop. The proprietor also made the discovery Friday morning. The damage was estimated to be between $50 and $500, reports stated.

On Sunday morning, Papa T’s on 201 Hillside Drive in south Athens also reported vandalism. The owner told officer Billy Troy Harrod that the large plate glass window appeared to have been shot out.

The Criminal Investigation Division is looking into the weekend incidents as well as a rash of recent residential burglaries and car break-ins reported last week.
