Two people were killed and one person was injured following a shooting in Van Zandt County on Wednesday night, according to a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Sgt. Jean Dark, a DPS spokesperson, said troopers responded to a call for assistance just before midnight from the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office regarding a disturbance call on CR 4710, east of FM 773. Several 911 calls were received from the residence about someone having been shot.

Officers saw a person on the ground near the driveway before they were met with gunfire from a suspect near the house. Officers returned fire, and the suspect retreated behind the house. The suspect was found dead near the home.

Dark said two people were apparently shot at the residence before officers arrived. One male and female were taken to Christus Trinity Mother Frances in Tyler for treatment. The male died at the hospital, and the female’s condition was not released on Thursday afternoon.

The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation, Dark said.
