Young archery enthusiasts will gather on Saturday for the first 4-H archery meeting.

“We have been working on getting this going for about a year now,” Hilary Grider from the Henderson County Agricultural Extension office said.

She said her office was approached by Johnny and Millicent Tennison about starting an archery group.

“They have a daughter who was interested in archery and were interested in getting a group started,” Grider said.

She said she then got in touch with the state to find out what guidelines they needed to follow.

“We have to have certified instructors to teach all our weapons classes, like shotgun, rifle or archery,” she said.

The Tennisons took courses to become state certified in archery and will lead the group, Grider said.

“The training we received was with a recurve bow, so that is what we will be using this year,” Mrs. Tennison said. “But anyone who has their own equipment or a compound bow is more than welcome to bring their own. They can enter the compound category at competition, too.”

During Saturday’s meeting, Mr. Tennison will demonstrate shots and Mrs. Tennison will discuss archery basics and history.

“We will teach instinctive shooting without sights at first, then later they will learn to use aids,” Mrs. Tennison said.

They will also discuss a convenient meeting time for all the families, she said.

“They will also talk to families about what they may need,” Grider said.

Grider said the group has “purchased one left-hand and one right-hand bow..” They are hoping to attract a large group, she said.

“We have bought supplies for 30 students,” Grider said.

The class is open to all 4-H participants and anyone who is school age can join 4-H, Mrs. Tennison said.

“We also will have clover kids,” she said. 4-H clover kids are ages 8 and younger.

The class will meet July 14 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Henderson County Fairpark Rifle Building.
