The Athens Police Department worked two motor vehicle crashes on U.S. Highway 175 over the weekend, that sent injured occupants of the vehicles to East Texas Medical Center for treatment.
On Saturday afternoon, an eastbound Honda was struck from behind while attempting to make a turn onto Lila Lane in the 1800 block of East U.S. Highway 175.
Athens police said Christopher Wilson, 19, failed to control speed of his Ford F-150, and crashed into the back of the Honda. The wreck sent the driver of the Honda, Marta Escalon, 38, and two minor passengers to East Texas Medical Center with incapacitating injuries.
The names of the passengers, a male and female, were not available on Monday afternoon.
APD Officer James Graham investigated the wreck. He was joined by Officer William Carlow and Sgt. William E. Smith. The Athens Fire Department responded with the Quint ladder truck and another fire engine.
On Sunday morning, a 2-vehicle crash occurred in the 900 block of West Corsicana Street. Allen Ruth, 51, of Malakoff, was westbound in the inside lane in a 2001 Mitsubishi, while a 2003 Ford F-150 driven by 49-year-old Silvestre Vasquez of Athens attempted to make a left turn onto Emma Street.
The F-150 did not yield, and turned into the path of the Mitsubishi, APD reports said. Ruth was transported to ETMC, and later released with non-incapacitating injuries.
Cpl. Billy Westover worked the wreck with the assistance of Sgt. Brett Morman and Officer Wesley Hoover. AFD responded with two fire engines.
