The Athens Police Department is investigating a break-in at Walgreens Saturday in which thieves used a stolen truck in an attempt to rip an ATM machine from the floor.

The thieves — thwarted in their attempt — soon fled, leaving behind both the vehicle and the money machine.

APD reports state the Walgreens alarm sounded shortly after 3 a.m. About a minute later, Officer Dana Dykes arrived and saw the front doors had been pried and the glass broken to gain entrance to the store.

“They stole the vehicle at the Woodland Apartments,” Athens Police Detective Sgt. Don Yarbrough said. “They tore the steering column open and started the vehicle.”

The thieves tied a chain around the axle of the truck and around the ATM to try to yank the machine through the door.

“The alarm went off and police were there in seconds,” Yarbrough said.

The investigation is ongoing.
