With a National Weather Service forecast calling for up to five inches of rain, many of the holiday events have been canceled, re-scheduled or moved to another location.
Holiday on the Square
With an 80 percent chance of rain for Saturday, members of the Light Up Athens committee said the annual event has been moved to the Texan Theater at 209 E. Tyler St.
“With the help of the city, we are excited to hold the Holiday on the Square event in the Texan,” Keep Athens Beautiful Executive Director Carol Morton said.
Also, Lunch with Santa has been canceled, and plans to reschedule or cancel the tree-lighting ceremony have not been announced.
She said the activities for children's face-painting and a balloon artist will still be available. Musical performances by Ash Gimler, Angela and Rayburn, and Loose Thread will perform inside the Texan.
“Our vendors are very excited to move the event inside,” said Morton. “We hope everyone comes out to support the event at the Texan.”
Some of the vendors at Holiday on the Square include LuLaRoe, Gopher Farms, Country Girl Chick, Guitars ETC., Cherokee Rose Custom Leather, KLS Crafts and Designs, Usborne Books and More, Factory Connection and Purity Salon and Spa.
City of Athens Parade
The city of Athens parade, originally set for Saturday, has been moved to Dec. 15. The parade will start at 5:30 p.m.
The 2018 theme is “At the Picture Show.” Organizers hope the parade floats have a Christmas movie theme. The deadline to register in the parade has been extended to Wednesday. Applications are at athenstx.gov.
On the day of the parade, all registered entries must check in at the city booth in the grass on the corner of the Trinity Valley Community College parking lot on Lakeside Dr. (Valle Vista). All entries will enter the parking lot from Lakeside Dr. Entries will be lined up according to their arrival.
Arrival time is no earlier than 2 p.m. Entries will not be allowed in the parade staging area before 2 p.m. on the day of the parade.
Prizes will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners, with first place receiving $1,000, second place receiving $700 and $300 given to third place.
Parade sponsors include Athens Screen Printing, Atmos Energy, Kevin Lilly's McDonald's and Republic Services.
Athens will host a Christmas carol singalong night at the Texan on Saturday, at 8 p.m.
The evening will include a 90-minute performance of Christmas carols, classics and tunes. No entry fee is required. However, a donation of three canned goods is required to attend. No alcohol will be served or sold, and no BYOB is allowed.
All ages are invited. Doors open at 7. Local vendor Callaway’s Coffee will offer coffee, hot chocolate and sweet treats for purchase.
Ole Fashion Christmas
The Christmas celebration in downtown Mabank has been rescheduled for Dec. 14.
Mabank’s Market Street will come alive with the sights and sounds of the season as it’s transformed into an Ole’ Fashioned Christmas, from 6 to 9.
Visitors can walk the streets while listening to Christmas carolers and receiving free hot beverages, popcorn and cookies.The massive model-train exhibit will be at Mabank City Hall, and the Tri-County Library will host story time. Santa is also expected.
Local businesses and clubs will provide free craft and kids’ activities throughout the evening. The tradition was started a few years ago and is sponsored by the city of Mabank and the Mabank chapter of the Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.
