It’s a little later on the calendar this year, but beginning Monday, all of the hustle and bustle of the Henderson County Livestock Show begins at the Fairpark Complex.

The 54th edition of the competition follows on the heels of the 2013 edition that smashed records. The Premium Auction that capped the event on Saturday raked in more than $520,000 for the exhibitors. The Grand Champion Steer, entered by Taylor Davis, sold for $8,500. Grant Hirsch’s Reserve Grand Champion brought a $5,000 price. The market hog sold for $3,750 and the reserve, $2,250.

To make it easier for those who want to attend the shows, the gate fee has been waived this year. You can thank the sponsors, Aqua Texas, Mooyah Burgers Fries and Shakes, Moorelicious Frozen Treats, Lonestar Western and Casual and the Henderson County Commissioners Court for making that happen.

President Danny Davis and the rest of the staff have been planning to make it the best week possible for the hundreds of youth participants, and more than 1,000 entries who’ll compete in one of the arenas during the week.

The on-site preparations get started Monday at 8 a.m. That involves horse pens and setting up pens for the hogs, goats and rabbits. It takes up to four people to carry a pen, because it is in one piece.

Once all of the pieces of hardware are in place, the events can begin. The competitions roll out in about the same order year-after-year, with a new one or two added from time-to-time.

Monday evening, the Queen and Princess of the show will be announced. The Princess will be in junior high or younger and the Queen will be in high school. You’ll see them presenting awards during the week to the various show winners.

On Tuesday morning at 8 a.m., the Youth Horse Show and Yearling Horse Show will begin. That evening at 5 p.m., the Breeding Swine Show kicks off.

At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, breeding rabbits will be shown. Weigh-in for the Market Swine will begin at 11 a.m., and end at 1 p.m. Shop projects will be judged at 4 p.m.

In the evening, weigh-ins for market lambs, market goats and steers will begin at 6 p.m. An hour and half later, the Dairy Cattle Show gets its start.

Thursday begins with the 8 a.m. market goat show, followed by the breeding goats, market lambs and breeding lambs. The market swine show begins at 5 p.m., and will last well into the night.

Friday features broilers at 9 a.m., breeding beef at noon and the market steers at 7 p.m.

Saturday at 11:30 a.m.,  the buyers luncheon begins, followed by the awards ceremony at 12:30 p.m. and the premium auction at 1 p.m.
