Considered a major fundraiser for the Athens Chamber of Commerce, the annual Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Stampede Rodeo was held Friday and Saturday at the Henderson County Fairpark Complex.

Event organizers deemed it a success as more than $13,000 was raised during the 29th annual event topping last year’s total.

Part of the success was the addition of the Go Texan barbecue cook-off that was held Saturday.

Jason Baker was named the grand champion overall for the event while also earning top honors in the rib category.

Philip Smith earned the title of reserve grand champion overall while earning reserve grand champion in ribs.

Elder Dodge, led by head cook Ryan Smith, took home grand champion honors in chicken while Jayson Armstrong earned top honors in brisket.

Best display was awarded to Texas Farm Credit.

There were 25 teams that participated in the cook-off.
