A Tool man faces multiple charges after his arrest Saturday for allegedly pushing his live-in girlfriend from his car, backing over her, then reacting violently to police attempts to transport him to jail.

Joseph Keith Davis, 43, was being held Wednesday in the Henderson County Jail on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a public servant, resisting arrest and criminal mischief. Bonds on Davis totaled $32,500.

According to Tool Police Sgt. Kendall Wellman, a 51-year-old Tool woman — whose name is not being released — said she and Davis were in the vehicle on State Highway 274 when they got into an argument. He shoved her out of the door and backed over her legs.

She told police she passed out for a few minutes, during which time Davis apparently carried her back to their house. When she regained consciousness, she said she crawled across the street to a house where she was able to contact police.

Wellman said the woman was transported to East Texas Medical Center in Gun Barrel City. Reports indicate she had cuts and scratches on most of her body and a bump on her head that may have been caused when her head hit the pavement.

Wellman said after the victim contacted police, Tool Police Officer Jason McCurdy went to Davis’ home and asked him to come outside. Davis exited the house and spoke to the officer. When McCurdy attempted to arrest Davis, Davis reportedly resisted. The officer subdued and handcuffed him and led him to the police car.

Once inside the vehicle, Wellman said Davis kicked the car door, then began spitting on the officer as he attempted to apply leg shackles.

Davis reportedly did considerable damage to the interior of the police car, including kicking the radar antennae off the back dash. Once McCurdy was able to get him to the Tool Police station he was restrained and transferred to the Henderson County Jail.

Wellman said later that night police spoke to the victim at the emergency room and got her account of the events. The case is still under investigation.
