The man who fled the scene of a major wreck last weekend was arrested on a warrant south of town, Athens Police Chief Buddy Hill said Wednesday.

Guadalupe Leon Garcia, 19, was arrested at a job site in Bradford, between Athens and Palestine on State Highway 19, Hill said. He was taken to the Henderson County Jail, where he remained as of press time. His bond for the charge of felony failure to stop and render aid was set at $5,000.

Hill said an APD detective visited the hospital Tuesday to speak with Barbara Denton, 67, of Maude. Denton, a passenger in the other vehicle involved in Saturday’s wreck, has had surgery on a foot that was nearly severed in the wreck.

According to police reports, DeKalb resident Linda K. May and Denton were traveling northbound on State Highway 19 just past the Loop 317 overpass when the wreck happened around 8:45 p.m. Garcia was on Watson Road, just to the south of the North Loop Apartments, when he pulled out in front of May’s vehicle.

Garcia’s vehicle struck the passenger side. Following the wreck, police reports state he left the scene on foot. A subsequent investigation helped police identify Garcia as the suspected driver. He then met with police but did not give a statement. Hill said Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Joe Gomez assisted police with translating for the Spanish-speaking Garcia.

Stolen gun recovered

Athens Police took a report of a gun and holster left in a mailbox Tuesday. Police learned the gun had been reported stolen out of a vehicle at 808 Lakeside Drive on Jan. 28.
