The Athens Zoning Commission at its Tuesday meeting approved a site plan that would bring a new Hibbett Sports store to the city.

The new building — built on the site of what was once Durham Jewelers — would be built on the corner of East Tyler Street and Murchison Street next to CVS pharmacy. The building would house Hibbett Sports and a 2,000-square-foot space that will be available for lease.

“As of right now all I have seen is a site plan,” City of Athens Director of Planning and Development Gary Crecelius said. “Until the building is up and Hibbett Sports is in the building, it’s not a for sure thing.”

If the store were actually to come, it would mark the second time Athens has had a Hibbett Sports. Several years ago, a Hibbett Sports store was located in the strip mall on East Tyler Street just west of Wal-Mart SuperCenter.

The property where the current site is being planned is owned by Hagan and Lonetta Chandler, according to the city. At one time, it was going to be the site of a Chandler Dry Cleaners.

The commission also approved the minutes from its Nov. 20 meeting and OK’d the replatting of the 300 block of Roosevelt St.
