Tina Hamilton, founder of Adopt a Happy Tail, Inc. in Murchison, is well known around Cedar Creek Lake for her love of all animals. She just wants all animals to find their forever home.
Hamilton was guest speaker at a recent Seven Points/Tool Branch of the Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce networking breakfast.
In the nine years Hamilton has been running the no-skill shelter, she has adopted out 834 animals.
Hamilton said when she moved to the lake area, she saw a need. She would find stray animals near her home, and didn't know what to do with them. The animal lover said the shelters were full, and she felt a need to protect the animals.
Happy Tails Rescue, once located in Gun Barrel City, now sits on more than three acres in Murchison, off State Highway 31.
Hamilton said the dogs she rescues are fully vetted before being adopted. She currently houses 76 dogs, two horses, a donkey, an emu and cats. She also has two pot-belly pigs on the property.
The rescue facility has a staff of two, and operates off private donations.
“We have volunteers who come help at the rescue,” Hamilton said. “American Airlines employees have helped, along with the Boy Scouts that come out to help and get badges. (Happy Tails Rescue has a youth mentoring program). But we can always use more volunteers and donations.”
The facility can always use donations of food for the animals. Hamilton said she currently is not accepting any more animals. At one time, the rescue housed over 100 dogs.
“We need to get some of the dogs adopted,” Hamilton said. “Our feed bill is $86 a day.”
Hamilton said the rescue uses a local veterinarian to help keep the animals healthy. Happy Tails depends on Friends of the Animals in Gun Barrel City for most of the rabies shots.
“We always try to find the least expense for the shots,” said Hamilton.
