Cedar Creek Lake has not one, but two local libraries –  The Tri-County Library in Mabank and the Library at Cedar Creek Lake in Seven Points.

Representatives from both libraries were guest speakers at the weekly luncheon of the Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon on Thursday.

Brandi Merritt from the Tri County Library and Cherry Ringley representing the Library at Cedar Creek Lake spoke to members of the chamber.

Public libraries have many important roles and responsibilities in our communities. Libraries increase overall literacy – especially children's literacy – and encourage lifelong learning.

Your local library also provides free access to important information and tools.

Libraries aim to foster children's literacy programs.

Both public libraries at Cedar Creek Lake have programs designed to teach young children to read, including summer reading programs, mentoring and even puppet or live shows.

It's an important role of the libraries to acclimate children to books so they receive a basic understanding of language.

It's important for libraries to help children learn to read, but it is equally important that they excite children about learning in general. Ringley said, “Libraries teach children that books are fun.”

All children should be encouraged to escape into the world of make believe through reading.

The local libraries are great at providing free resources, such as Internet and e-books.

One of the responsibilities of the libraries is to encourage lifelong learning.

“People never stop learning, and libraries allow for continued enrichment,” Ringley said.

Since our local libraries offer free resources, people can easily find new information, and learn a new topic each day.

Both libraries are sustained from public donations.

The Library at Cedar Creek Lake will once again be hosting its annual fundraising event, Denim and Diamond, at Athens Country Club on Saturday, March 28.
