The Athens Police Department is currently investigating a break-in at the Exxon station on East Tyler Street in which an ATM machine was burglarized.
APD received a call shortly after 6 a.m. Thursday from an employee at the store who arrived shortly after 6 a.m., and discovered that someone had entered the building and damaged the machine.
Lt. Mike Davis said the store had been closed and locked at about 10:20 p.m. the night before. Sometime during the overnight hours, someone went to the rear of the metal building, took out the screws and removed a portion of it.
Once inside, the burglar went to the ATM machine and pried it open. The thief escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Assistant Chief Rodney Williams, Sgt. William E. Smith, Lt. Bill Gurley and Det. Bill Carlow were dispatched to the building. The case has been turned over to the Criminal Investigations Division.
Another weekend burglary was reported at the Red Dot Building Systems in the 1200 block of West Corsicana Street. APD received a call at about 8 a.m., Monday concerning three vehicles that had been entered by unknown persons since Friday.
