A house in Athens was destroyed Sunday morning, in a fire that authorities are investigating as a possible burglary and arson, Athens Police Department reports show.

The wooden-frame house at 903 Cream Level Road was a total loss, with only a few charred posts standing.

Fire Marshal Ronny Denton and Athens Fire Department personnel returned to the house to continue looking for the cause of the blaze, that erupted about the time many were headed to Sunday church services..

APD reports said dispatch received a 9-1-1 fire call at about 10:47 a.m. The fire department was notified, and sent two pumpers to the scene.

Shortly after firefighters began to battle the blaze, APD Officer Shane Hagood, Sgt. William E. Smith and Cpl. Jason Bosher were sent to the house to assist.

Upon arriving at the structure fire, responders noticed that the back door had been forced open, and the washer and dryer units had been removed.

Bosher took a report on the missing items, and turned it over to the Criminal Investigatons Division.

Detective William Carlow went to the scene Sunday afternoon to begin his probe into the suspected burglary.
