A 17-year-old Athens High School senior was killed early Saturday morning in an automobile wreck near Murchison.

Stephanie Ann Loper was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck by Pct. 3 Justice of the Peace Sue Starnes, according to an official with the Texas Department of Public Safety office in Waco.

The wreck happened at 1:10 a.m. on Farm-to-Market Road 773, about two-and-a-half miles north of Murchison.

According to the DPS report, Loper was driving a 1998 Chevrolet pickup. She was driving southbound on FM 773 when her vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway. Loper then overcorrected to the left side of the road and struck a tree.

She was not wearing a seat belt.

Though conditions around the county were foggy later in the morning around sunrise, the DPS report states the conditions at the time of the wreck were dry and clear.

The wreck is being investigated by Corp. Bryan Barnhart of the DPS office in Athens.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Cooper Funeral Home of Athens. Her funeral is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Dogwood Baptist Church with Perry Eaton officiating.

Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park.

Loper was employed by Medical Arts Clinic of Athens, according to the funeral home. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and riding four-wheelers.
