It's that time of year again where the sound of school bells ring for the last time, children and teachers jump for joy. The ringing of the bell can create a mix of emotions for working parents though who have to decide where their children will go during work hours and where can they go to have fun?
Luckily for Athens there are many fun activities here and in the surrounding areas.
Good Times Skate Arena was opened by Clint and Quessie Morton in 1983. Quessie Morton started working at a skating rink at 15 years old when they still had live music. Trini Lopez played live music and she loved it.
“I thought one of these days I just might open a skating rink!”
They were running a rink across from the hospital and decided to buy the building they currently have. It was only 100 feet long and the Morton's added 75 feet, put maple floors in and later dropped the ceiling.
“I didn't care for smoking so I didn't allow smoking.” Quessie said.
Good Times now offers bubble machines, the arcade, pool, and the “Theme Machine” which came from New York. The “Theme Machine” is a virtual reality room where children play hundreds of games with their feet.
“If they are old enough to walk, they are old enough to skate.” Quessie said.
The rink offers inline, speed and roller skates and also offer private parties. Trainers and scooters are available for a fee although scooters are only available for private parties.
“I like the kids, school groups, church groups and daycares!” she said.
According to the Roller Skating Association, roller skating is safer than many sports or even bicycling. Roller skating is also a great way to stay in shape and causes 50 percent less stress to joints then running. So go on out and listen to current music and have a night out.
The rink is open Friday and Saturday from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday afternoon 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $5 and includes rental skates. Inline/speed skates are a $3 additional fee. The Mortons will open during the week for private parties or school trips as long as they have two day cares. She also offers late skates as a private party option. Private parties require a deposit, please call for pricing. Good Times is located at 517 Progress Way Please contact Quessie Morton at 903-677-1168
