Jeb Hensarling

U.S. Congressman Jeb Hensarling is asking Athenians for help.

Hensarling will be at the Shell Food Mart on East Tyler Street Wednesday at 9:45 a.m. for what his office is calling an energy policy discussion and letter signing. Hensarling is asking Athens residents to sign a letter addressed to Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi requesting she allow a vote on legislation to develop more American energy.

Congress went into recess on Friday, July 29, for a five-week vacation.

“East Texas families have been forced to postpone or cancel their summer vacations due to the high cost of energy, and Washington should be ashamed,” Hensarling said in an August 4 press release.

Hensarling was in Washington to demand Pelosi to call a vote. According to a press release from Hensarling’s office, the vote would be on The American Energy Act (HR 6566). The legislation is “a single, comprehensive bill that would accomplish the following: Increase the supply of America-made energy, improve energy conservation and efficiency and promote renewable and alternative technologies.”

“We have a plan ... that is comprehensive and preventative,” Hensarling said, “meaning that hurricanes or political turmoil in Iran or Venezuela will not put our security in jeopardy or force Texans to choose between buying a gallon of milk or a gallon of gas.”
