The No. 2-ranked Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals may have not been much on style points Saturday afternoon, but they had well more than enough points on the scoreboard.
TVCC pulled away in the second half to score a 111-77 win over the short-handed San Jacinto College Lady Gators in a Region XIV Conference game at Cardinal Gym.
San Jacinto, which saw its season close at 5-21 overall and 0-18 in the conference, had just six players in uniform. The Lady Gators played the final 27:41 with just five after Arlene Solis left with an injury in the second half.
The Lady Gators played with heart — a lot of heart — and gave TVCC a run for its money in the opening half. The Lady Cardinals seemingly went through the motions to build a 49-34 halftime lead.
TVCC was of its game throughout most of the game, especially in the first half. The Lady Cardinals turned the ball over 12 times in the opening half and was 18 of 45 from the floor.
Courtney Simmons had a big second half for the Lady Cardinals, scoring all 18 of her points. Corkey Stiger came up big in the final 20 minutes, hitting 15 of her team-high 19 points.
Shannon Bobbitt, who accounted for four of TVCC’s nine three-pointers, finished with 16 points. Artavia Burns was also in double figures with 13.
Game-high scoring honors went to San Jacinto’s Melissa Boulenger. She had 24. Kristee Wallace had 23 for the Lady Gators and Ashlee Thomas added 16.
The win improved TVCC to 27-1 on the year and 17-0 in the conference.
The Lady Cardinals will attempt to finish unbeaten in conference play Tuesday on the road against Lon Morris College. Tipoff in Jacksonville is 5:30 p.m.
