Currently ranked No. 8 in the state in Class 4A, the Athens Hornets are setting the pace in the District 15-AAAA soccer race.

Coach D.J. Hammonds’ Hornets ran their season record to a sparkling 17-1-1 last week with a pair of victories. AHS is 8-0 in 15-AAAA after a 3-0 shutout of Lindale at Bruce Field and 2-0 blanking of Jacksonville at the Tomato Bowl.

The Hornets, regional finalists a year ago, own a full two-game lead in the district race.

The Hornets are scheduled to return to action at home tonight against Mabank. Junior varsity action begins at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity contest is slated to begin around 7 p.m. The Hornets travel Frida to Palestine.

Angel Chairez, Chris Abadie and Jamie Chairez score one goal each in the win over lindale.

Jose Mota, Juan Carranza and Jamie Chairez had assists.

In the win over Jacksonville, Jamie Chairez and Abadie scored one goal each.

Michael David and Carranza dished out assists.
