County releases ‘10 Most Wanted’ list

Sheriff’s Department hopes to wrangle in those who have been on the lam, in some cases, for several years

The Henderson County Sheriff’s Department has released an infamous list.

The department has released a Top 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list that includes names and pictures of felons who have eluded capture in the county. Warrant Deputy Billy Jack Valentine said the department hopes the list will encourage citizens to keep their eyes open for the offenders.

“It’s kind of like our version of America’s Most Wanted. These on the top 10 are some that have absconded for some time,” Valentine said. “We’re seeking the support of the community and help from the people in locating them.”

In addition to publishing the list in the Athens Review and other outlets, the department is putting together a Web page that will offer the most recent information concerning the fugitives. When a fugitive is captured, it will be noted on the site and another person will be added to the list.

Henderson County Sheriff Ray Nutt said he believes the list can be a useful tool for his department.

“I think it’s a great deal,” Nutt said. “There’s been excellent cooperation with the news media and with Crimestoppers.”

“Some of these absconders have run from us for years and have kind of fallen off the map,” Valentine said.

The first offender on the list is a prime example, Valentine said.

“Travis Wayne Jones has eluded capture since 2003 for an aggravated sexual assault,” Valentine said.

As warrant officer, Valentine’s main duty is making arrests. He said the remaining deputies are also helping bring the list of active warrants down.

“All the deputies are working,” Valentine said. “It’s just a good environment at the department right now.”

Anyone who has information concerning the fugitives can contact the sheriff’s department (903-675-5128) or Henderson County Crimestoppers at (903)677-TIPS. All callers can remain anonymous.
