BREAKING NEWS: After prosecution rests, defense to take turn

The state, led by Henderson County District Attorney Donna Bennett, rested its case Wednesday in the capital murder trial of Randall Wayne Mays. The defense team, headed by Tyler attorney Bobby Mims, began presenting its case this morning.

Mays is being tried for shooting and killing Henderson County Sheriff's Deputy Tony Ogburn, 61, on May 17, 2007. Mays also shot and killed Henderson County Sheriff's Investigator Paul Habelt, 63. Mims admitted during opening arguments Monday that Mays shot both men. He said he will provide jurors a reason why he shot them later in the trial.

If guilty, Mays could face life in prison or the death penalty.
