Hornets even record at 8-8 with 70-58 loss to Crandall

Athens — The back-and-forth season continued for first-year Athens head coach Gerald Anthony in a 70-58 loss in non-district action to the Crandall Pirates Friday night at AHS Gymnasium.

The Hornets (8-8) fell behind by double digits at the half.

They were able to battle back to cut the Crandall lead to single digits at, 41-32, with 3:18 remaining on an Anthony Taylor fast break layup in the third quarter.

Coach Anthony said defensively the Hornets could not figure out how to stop Crandall's speed and offensive game plan throughout the contest.

Crandall (12-2) held a 51-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter by finding ways throughout the game to aggravate the AHS defense.

“We didn’t do what we planned to do which was keeping the ball out of the middle, challenge the outside shooters and block out,” Anthony said.

Taylor finished with 16 points for the Hornets, while Courtland Lyons added 16 points.

Junior guard Anthony Sanders finished with 13 points.

Crandall was led by Isaac Russel with 20 points.

The Hornets travel to Ferris tonight to take on the Yellowjackets (2-9) before returning to AHS Gymnasium Friday to face the Class 1A No. 7-ranked Cayuga Wildcats.

Tipoff for Friday’s matchup will begin at around 4:30 p.m.

Athens jumped out to a 28-17 lead at intermission but New Summerfield found a way to score in the second half to outscore Athens, 33-24, in the second half of play.
