BROWNSBORO —
The Brownsboro Bears staged two comeback attempts on Thursday to open the Great East Texas Shootout.
One succeeded.
The Bearettes (8-5) rebounded from a miserable first half to beat the Gilmer Lady Buckeyes, 40-34, in first-round tournament action, then came up short in a 48-41 loss to the Sunnyvale Lady Raiders later in the day.
Brownsboro scored just nine first half points — including a measly three in the second quarter — in falling behind to Gilmer at the half, 17-9.
Briana Warren and Shelbie Bagby helped the Bearettes turn the tables, scoring nine and seven points, respectively in a 19-point outburst in the third that gave Brownsboro a 28-26 lead.
Sidney Hightower led the Bearettes with 12 points. Warren finished with 11. Bagby netted eight.
The Bearettes trailed the Lady Raiders after each of the first three quarters in their evening matchup, but closed the gap to 38-36 in the final minutes on Devin Carter’s wild three-pointer that found the bottom of the net.
The Lady Raiders got a pair of easy layups and went 2 of 4 from the line in the final minute to hang on for the win.
