HALLSVILLE —
The Athens Lady Hornets are focusing more and more on finishing games.
They came close to pulling off that feat Tuesday night.
The Hallsville Lady Bobcats used a big fourth quarter to rally past the Lady Hornets, 60-51, in non-district action. That rally trumped Athens’ own big third quarter that put the Lady Hornets in the lead.
“The girls played hard and more consistently all four quarters tonight,” Athens head coach Dee Evans said. “We are becoming a more competitive team on the floor with getting this accomplished.”
The Lady Hornets (2-4) trailed, 27-19, at the half but scored 21 third-quarter points to take a 40-38 lead. Hallsville then pulled the same trick, scoring 22 in the fourth to run past Athens.
Demi Cumby led Athens with 15 points to go along with five steals. Cari Aguilera had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and Bryla Barker finished with eight points and 12 rebounds. Shelby Sims added six points and nine boards, and Allison Kalawe pitched in six points.
The Lady Hornets return to action Thursday at Lindale’s Hoop Heaven Tournament. Athens opens the tournament Thursday at 3 p.m. against Henderson.
Martins Mill 46, Mabank 33
MABANK — The Mabank Lady Panthers dropped a 46-33 decision to the Class 1A No. 1 Martins Mill Lady Mustangs in non-district action Tuesday.
Kourtney Holyfield led Mabank with 12 points, and she also had four steals. Meagan Holyfield added nine points, while Hazel Puempel collected nine rebounds.
The Lady Panthers return to action beginning Thursday at the Wills Point Tournament.
