The Athens Review
CROSS ROADS —
The Athens Lady Hornets snapped a two-game losing skid with a 63-37 win over the Cross Roads Lady Cats Tuesday afternoon.
Demi Cumby scored 31 points to lead the Lady Hornets, who will enjoy a couple of days off around the Thanksgiving holiday before resuming action next Tuesday at Hallsville. Head coach Dee Evans’ team improved to 2-3 on the season.
“The girls played all four quarters today,” Evans said. “We had a more consistent defensive game, and we feel good about our press.”
The Lady Hornets trailed, 5-2, midway through the first quarter but charged to the front on the strength of a 13-0 run — with 10 of those points coming from Cumby. Josee McNeece’s jumper with 12 seconds left in the opening quarter pushed the Athens lead to 10, 17-7, and capped a 15-2 run over the final 4:07.
The Lady Hornets pushed that lead to 33-11 in the second quarter with Cumby and Shelby Sims locking into a nice two-man game. The pair alternated turns scoring 12 straight points. Cross Roads had a chance to keep the game close but missed eight of 10 free throw attempts in the quarter.
Neither team shot well from the line, with Athens going 4 of 16 and Cross Roads finishing 9 of 26.
“We need to become stronger at the line and become more confident with our outside shooting,” Evans said.
The Lady Cats tried to climb back into the game thanks to some sharp shooting from Keslie Lookabaugh and Kourtney Hazelip — who combined to score 12 of their team’s 18 points in the third quarter. But Cumby put a stop to the charge with a jumper and then a dead-on three to push the lead to 18 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Hornet defense proved too tough for the Lady Cats to get any closer to the lead. Athens blocked nine shots and finished with 13 steals — including five from Cumby. Caridad Aguilera had three.
In addition to Cumby’s impressive outing, 6-0 sophomore post Bryla Barker finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Sims also had a big day with eight points and 13 rebounds.
Hazelip finished with 12 points and Lookabaugh had 11 for the Lady Cats.
Cross Roads picks up after the holiday with a Tuesday, Nov. 27, game at Scurry-Rosser.
