HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Athens falls to Rains, Mabank tops Gateway

ATHENS — The Athens Lady Hornets got 30 points and seven steals from Demi Cumby and eight from Bryla Barker in a 73-53 loss to the Rains Lady Wildcats Friday night at AHS Gym.

The Lady Hornets (1-3) trailed by just two, 23-21, after the first quarter, but they fell behind after being outscored, 30-12, over the middle quarters. Each team scored 20 points in the fourth quarter.

"The girls played hard the first and last quarters, but we are inconsistent and not playing all four quarters defensively and offensively," first-year Athens head coach Dee Evans said.

Leah Lawrence added six points and Cadi Aguilera and Shelby Sims each had three for the Lady Hornets. Aguilera and Lawrence added three steals each, and Sims had six rebounds.

Athens returns to action next Tuesday at Cross Roads. Game time has been moved up to 1 p.m.

Mabank 51, Dallas Gateway 17

MABANK — The Mabank Lady Panthers had three players in double figures in their shellacking of Dallas Gateway on Friday.

Kaitlyn Holyfield and Kourtney Holyfield each scored 11 points, while Bailey Swain added 10 for head coach Ashleigh Weeaks' Lady Panthers. The Lady Panthers are scheduled to return to action on Monday at Spring Hill. Junior varsity action is slated to begin at 3 p.m., with the varsity to follow around 4:15.

Mabank will host Kaufman on Tuesday, with ninth-grade and junior varsity games set for 1 p.m. and varsity slated to begin around 2:30.
