MESQUITE — The record breaking season continues for the Malakoff Tigers as they pulled off a big win over the Van Alstyne Panthers Friday night.

The Tigers won, 38-25 in a Region II-2A Division I area round matchup at Mesquite’s E.H. Hanby Stadium.

Fifth-year head coach Jamie Driskell’s Tigers (11-1) notched its first 10-win season since 1947 last week in a 41-14 bi-district win over Queen City.

With Friday night’s win, the Tigers have secured its first 11-win season in school history and its first trip to the regional round against New Boston next weekend. New Boston defeated Whitesboro 14-7 in the other area round contest.

Van Alstyne ends its season with a 7-4 record.

The two-headed running duo of senior Damontes Dowell and junior Marcus Dowell put together the patented running games. Damontes finished the night with 24 carries for 216 yards and four touchdowns, while Marcus finished with 77 yards on 17 carries. He also had two rushing touchdowns.

Malakoff jumped out to a 26-6 lead at the half following a 7-6 lead after the opening quarter.

The chilly conditions at E.H. Hanby Stadium played a factor as Damontes Dowell scored the game’s opening touchdown from three-yards out with 8:37 remaining in the opening quarter.

Van Alstyne then recovered a mishandled snap by Tigers quarterback Deric Greenhaw as Will Jones pick up the loose ball and scored from nine yards out. On the PAT, the Panthers were unable to get hold of the ball as the Panthers trailed 7-6 with 5:30 remaining in the quarter.

The Tiger’s then blew the game open as Marcus Dowell pounded his way in from a yard out with 11:16 remaining in the first half.

Following a three-and-out by Van Alstyne, MHS went to its quick playing scoring as Damontes Dowell capped off a two-play, 30-yard drive with a 30-yard rumble for the touchdown with 7:45 remaining.

Damontes then ended the first half scoring with a 79-yard burst for the 26-6 lead with 5:17 remaining in the opening half.

MHS outgained Van Alstyne, 211-56, in total offense in the first half of play.

In the second half, Damontes Dowell scored his fourth touchdown of the game on a 14 yard pass play from Deric Greenhaw, but the Panthers were not going away.

In the fourth quarter, Van Alstyne scored its second defensive touchdown as Bryce Himmelreich picked up a 48-yard fumble return to cut into the lead with 11:23 remaining.

Marcus Dowell then scored the Tigers final touchdown on a 22 yard run for a 38-12 lead with 8:27 remaining.

Van Alstyne would then score the game’s final 13 points as Grayson Leinart pulled down a spectacular catch in the corner of the end zone from Alex Phillips for 16 yards with 6:12 remaining.

Phillips then scored on a one-yard run with 1:44 remaining for the 38-25 deficit.

Greenhaw finished the game five-of-10 passing for 91 yards with two of those passes going to Terrance Scott for 51 yards.
